Holds a doctorate degree in Social Sciences; a Pan-Africanist, well-known as a human rights activist, networker, broker, bridge builder.
During the UN third World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in 2001 in Durban/South Africa, she was the NGO Liaison in the Dutch Governmental Delegation, unanimously appointed by the involved Pan-African organizations and Women’s movements and all other relevant NGO’s as an excellent opportunity to lobby that the trans-Atlantic Slave trade, slavery and colonialism be declared as crimes against humanity.
In 2006 Dr. Biekman was one of the initiators of the Pan-African Roundtable on Durban plus 5; the Addis Ababa Roundtable (April 2007: https://app.box.com/s/1ggn76iqlbjnyxxx047u5fz97apmdmho); actively involved in the process towards the UN Durban Review in 2009 (Genève) and the High Level Panel in 2011 (New York). In 2016 she was co-facilitator of the Rotterdam Roundtable on Durban plus 15 (https://app.box.com/s/13psfb27tzmo4wzd2zogq3h70jj24rlw). Currently she is involved as co-facilitator of the Pan African Coalition on DurbanPlus20&After.
African Union African Diaspora Declaration (2012)
From the moment in 2003 that Article 3q of the AU Constitutive act was adopted, Dr. Barryl Biekman’s concentration was the active promotion towards worldwide Diaspora Communities. Between 2004 and 2007 she was involved in several platforms such as the Pan African Policy & Strategic Working Group (PanAfStrag) based in Nigeria and the Sub regional Diaspora Council Western Hemisphere. The Focus was the remotivation, mobilization and organisation of the Communities; and the implementation of Article 3q in AU & Nation States policies. In 2011 a format has been created for structuring on Federal Europe Region level in cooperation with Leading Pan-Africanis in Europe and one for structuring on national level. Dr. Biekman was invited numerous times as a speaker. She speaks proudly about the Pan African Giants such as †Baba Dudley Thompson. Her activism lead to active participation in the AU technical sessions regarding the development of the African Union African Declaration and Program of Activities that has been formally adopted on (25) May 2012.
She is Coordinator of the AU African Diaspora 6th Region Facilitators Working Group Europe Region, the organization structure that has been built in Europe to coordinate, manage and monitor the interest of the Europe Region African Diaspora.
Dr. Biekman is Ambassador of the AFRIDU (African Diaspora Union organization based in South Africa); Chair of the Ghana Suriname Chamber of Commerce based in the Netherlands and one of the Founding members of the African Royal Chamber of Commerce based in Ghana.
Another merit is the creation of the DECADE OF RETURN ACCRA DECLARATION 2019 (https://app.box.com/s/o42o6wvfj52og1ey46m8gc3lltopejz2) as a follow-up strategy of the Year of Return 2019 that was launched by the President of Ghana.
International UN Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024
As a result of years of tenacious active involvement in the field of Human Rights in general and in the struggle for the implementation of the DDPA 2001, Dr. Biekman was chosen and appointed by the
President of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly to be the Civil Society Speaker (https://app.box.com/s/4sgg9vpjvd95capjmribd36gxc4m6boy) during the UN Launching of the International Decade for People of African Descent in December 2014.
In 2021 Biekman was nominated again by the President of the UN General Assembly to deliver the Keynote Address as Civil Society Speaker during the Plenary of the UNGA High Level Meeting of the 20 anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action Session on September, 22, 2021 with the Theme: “Reparations, racial justice and equality for people of African descent”
